Click here to see pictures from the trip, mostly you'll see the teenagers, but you'll get a few glimpses of the museum as well. I didn't want to show you too much - You need to go see it for yourself!)
The Creation Museum is located in Petersburg, KY, which is about 10 minutes outside of Cincinatti, OH. We took the youth group from our church to the museum for our fall retreat this year (October 2009).
Everything in the CM was extremely well planned and designed. It reminds you of Disneyworld in the effort they put in to design the exhibits. The main section of the museum is designed to be walked through at one time and takes about 2-3 hours, (or longer) depending on how big of a reader you are. There is alot of reading... and alot to learn. But even if you are not a reader, you will still enjoy and learn from the visual exhibits. This tour takes you back in time to the garden of Eden, where it all began. There are life size models of Adam and Eve, the animals, tree of life... etc.. like you are walking right through it all. It continues to tell the account of the serpent, the fruit, sin entering the world and the need for a sacrifice and a Savior. It continues to tell stories in exhibits from Genesis, alot of time being spent on the flood. There is a giant ark you can walk through. For the scientific mind, a room of geologic examples that are a result of the flood and how they support creation. The tour ends with a short film called "The Last Adam" which tells of Jesus and His sacrifice to pay for our sins.
There are many audio and video elements throughout the museum to help explain concepts and keep things interesting. Outside of this tour, there is a dinosaur den with a giant T-Rex and other dinosaurs. There are a few restaraunts and snack bars and a bookstore/gift shop where you purchase just about anything you've seen on video in the museum and much much more.
In addition to "The Last Adam", there is a show called "Men in White" where two Men in white (angels - Gabe and Micheal) show you a funny look at the creation vs. evolution debate complete with special effects. The Stargazer's Planetarium is an addition $8, and worth every penny. Most people in our group said that this was their favorite thing they saw in the museum. It starts out on what we can see from our planet, then slowly goes out into space, explaining what is out there in the known universe. This show really helps you start to comprehend how vast the universe is and how small we are.
Outdoors, there are many garden paths to walk through with waterfalls, swinging bridges, ponds, beautiful flowers and landscaping and a petting zoo.
I think all ages could definitely enjoy the museum. Of course for young children, there will many concepts over their head.. some were over mine! But with an adult to help them out I think even small children, could learn alot here.
Museum Details:
Cost: adults $22 Kids $12 Group rate is $17 and $9
Planetarium: $8 - $7 (group)
It takes most of the day to see the museum
From Chattanooga, it took us about 7 hours to drive both directions. We stopped a couple of times for a quick breat and stopped for lunch on the return trip. It is a straight drive up 1-75, the museum is about 11 miles off I-75.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was getting to experience it through the eyes of another person. A girl who lives in the neighborhood who has been coming on Wednesday nights on the church van, came with us on this trip. I was with her during part of the museum tour and she could not stop asking questions. The ones that got me were during the "Adam and Eve' section of the museum. After Eve eats the fruit, she said "You mean beacuse of that one thing, we all sin?" The next room showed many of the horrible things that have happend in our world because of that sin. "All of these terrible things happened because she ate that fruit?" "Why do they have to kill those animals?" Things I've heard since before I could walk, this 12 year old was seeing and hearing for the first time. Reminds me of how many people there are out there who have never heard these accounts, never had the experiences we have been blessed with, and do not know that Jesus died to save them.
BTW, she did have one very knowledgeable person who stayed with her during the entire tour and answered all her questions to the best of her ability.
